England's Best Innovative Steak

3rd March 2015

Local business Althams Butchers, based in Morecambe, is in the running to be crowned the winner of 'England's Best Innovative Steak 2015' - a competition to find the most innovative quality steak products in the country.

Run by EBLEX, 'England's Best Innovative Steak' is one of three competitions to make up the newly launched Quality Standard Mark Excellence Awards 2015. Along with 'England's Best Sirloin Steak' and 'England's Best Steak Pie', the awards recognise steak products that deliver excellent eating qualities and the highest levels of customer satisfaction both in and out of the home.

Butchers, supermarkets and caterers throughout the country were invited to present their innovative steaks, including exciting new concepts and traditional cuts presented in interesting and appealing ways.

Althams Butchers entered the 'Innovative Butchery' category in England's Best Innovative Steak competition and its 'Lamb Neck Fillet Steak' was one of just seven steaks in the category to achieve a prestigious Gold Award.

From those, only the best three products in the category were selected to go through to the final, which means that Althams Butchers has a good chance of being crowned the Innovative Butchery category winner, as well as Overall Champion and producer of England's Best Innovative Steak 2015.

Three products were also selected from the 'Added Value' category to go through to the final and will compete for the title.

Competition organiser, foodservice project manager for EBLEX, Hugh Judd, said: "There are many wonderful steak cuts now available - from a Flat Iron to a Denver steak - which offer great taste, succulence and value. As well as raising awareness of these alternative cuts, we also want to give local butchers and producers the opportunity to showcase ways in which they are enhancing some of the prime steak cuts too, such as Sirloin. With the addition of rubs and marinades, they really are bringing extra sizzle to the steak market.

"This competition set out to recognise the extra steps butchers and retailers are taking in order to excite customers with fresh new steak ideas and keep this dish on the menu as one of the nation's favourite meals. Althams Butchers is now in with a chance of taking home the title of 'England's Best Innovative Steak' and I wish them the very best of luck."
