John Robert Altham

1899-1983

Born in Queen Street above the butcher's shop. During the second world war he served as an air raid warden volunteering for service in West Ham during the London Blitz.

During his working life the firm expanded with three retail shops, a wholesale meat business and the establishment of a ship's chandelling business.

He was also:

• Chairman of Morecambe Football Club for 20 years

• President of Lancaster and Morecambe Agricultural Society

• President of Ellel Ploughing and Hedging

• President of Heysham Cricket Club

• President of Morecambe Amateurs

• Member Morecambe Sea Cadets

• Freemason

• Vice President of the Horticultural Society

• Member of Sailor's Children's Society
